Review of M-Edge Touring Kindle DX Sleeve (Fits 9.7" Display, Latest Generation Kindle DX), Black

First of all, my wife, (for whom I purchased the DX), likes her Kindle naked. So, we looked for jackets, or slip cases, Not covers. The qualities we were looking for include ruggedness, (or the products perceived longevity based upon quality of construction), ease of use for its' intended purpose, and I added an attribute entitled Protection coeficient, or, how well it protects the Kindle under a variety of conditions.

Ruggedness: Neoprene has been around for awhile now, protecting notebook computers and the like.It seems to be upstaging ballistic nylon and even such notables as Tumi are starting to make cases out of it.It posseses a suppleness that ballistic nylon will never have; it feels smooth to the touch and is somewhat gripy under the fingers. If it works for laptops then we thought it must surely be a good application for the DX.We think that it is a better application of it's attributes for use with the DX then it would be for a laptop.Personally I just do not think neoprene will stand up to a high pressure, sharp edged impact such as would occur if the corner of a laptop impacted a hard imoveable object while in the case.I think the neoprene would be pinch cut all the way through. For use as a DX jacket on the other hand, it works great! The DX is flat and unobtrusive by nature without a lot of inherent inertial weight. Combine that with the fact that it just goes against nature to throw your DX around and Neoprene is a great choice for this jacket. In addition, the stitching on the zippers and the quality of the zippers themselves is first rate.It cleans very easily with very mild soap and a little water. We tried this once and blotted the surface dry immediately. This resulted in a brand new looking surface and there was no bleed though of moisture that I could detect.

Ease of use: Some have complained that the jacket is too tight making it hard to get the DX zipped up.Well, it's just my opinion but it needs to fit snuggly to pevent the DX from slipping around! It's not so tight that you can't zip it up; the Neoprene is stretchy and allows for just a little tugging. That's all it takes.Ahh, the handle! What a nice touch. The handle will disappear inside it's own zipped compartment if you don't want it flopping around but when you need it for alternative ways to carry the DX, it's there. There is also a zipped compartment to hold the USB/charging cord and I think it would work well for just the cord....Not the A/C charging adapter. The A/C adapter is just too bulky and I'd be concerned about it causing a presure point on either the DX screen or the alluminum case, (depending on how you have the DX inserted).

Protection coeficient: The Neoprene material is, I think, a great material for use as a DX jacket.Combine this with the fact that M-Edge has thought to add a semi-rigid panel just under the neoprene on both front and back sides, and this should provide all the protection the DX will need.Edges and corners are well padded although they do rely somewhat on the zippers for strength.More specfically, there are two rolled beads covered in nylon one on either side just behind the zipper that wrap around the entire edge of the DX.When zipped, the beads approximate between the DX and zipper. The whole edge protetion thing is I think, very well thought out.And of course, the flat inside fabric panels of the jacket are as soft and semi fuzzy as is gets.

To sum up, would I drop the DX within it's zipped M-Edge jacket on a corner from a position about waist high?I won't...but then it's not supposed to be an aircraft alluminum, foan padded, shock proof enclosure. I happen to believe that for the $35 we spent we got just the right amount of protection and added versatility we could ask for.
